What is Rhinocort aqua?

• Rhinocort aqua is a steroid. It prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation.
• Rhinocort aqua is used to treat the nasal symptoms of allergies and other seasonal reactions.
• Rhinocort aqua may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Who should not use Rhinocort aqua?

• Before using this medication, tell your doctor if you have a viral, bacterial, or fungal infection of any kind. The absorption of this drug into your system can inhibit your body's ability to fight off infections. You may not be able to use Rhinocort aqua if you have an infection.
• Rhinocort aqua is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is unlikely to be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take Rhinocort aqua without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant.
• It is not known whether Rhinocort aqua passes into breast milk. Do not use Rhinocort aqua without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
• Rhinocort aqua is not approved for use in children younger than 6 years of age.

How should I use Rhinocort aqua?

• Use Rhinocort aqua exactly as directed by your doctor. Read the information insert included with your medication. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you.
• Gently blow your nose before using the nasal inhaler or nasal spray to clear any mucous.
• To use the nasal inhaler:
  • Open the nasal inhaler by pressing on the arrow and rotating until it clicks into the locked position, then shake the inhaler several times. Place your thumb on the bottom of the unit (on the grid) while placing your index finger on the top of the canister. Wrap your fingers securely around the back. Press straight down on the canister to deliver a dose. Spray into the air 4 times before using the nasal inhaler for the first time. If the nasal inhaler is not used for 8 weeks or more, spray into the air 4 times before reuse.
  • Close one nostril and insert the end of the inhaler tube into the other nostril. Hold your breath and deliver a dose. If you are using more than one spray, repeat this procedure as directed. Repeat this process in your other nostril. For best results, shake the canister between sprays. Rotate the unit closed for storage.
  • To clean the nasal inhaler, remove the aerosol container and wash the plastic parts in warm water, with the addition of mild soap if necessary. Allow the plastic parts to dry completely and then replace the container.
• To use the nasal spray:
  • Shake the bottle several times. Before using the nasal spray for the first time, prime the unit by pumping the device 8 times. If used daily, the pump does not need to be reprimed. If it is not used for two consecutive days, reprime the unit with one spray or until a fine spray appears. If the unit is not used for more than 14 days, rinse the applicator and reprime with two sprays or until a fine spray appears.
  • After the unit is primed, insert the tip about 1 cm (one-half inch) into your nostril, pointing it straight up into the nasal canal. Block your other nostril and keep your head upright or tilted slightly forward. Pump and sniff gently at the same time. If you are using more than one spray, repeat this procedure as directed. Repeat this process in your other nostril. Remove the pump from your nose. Then, clean the pump nozzle with a tissue and recap it.
• Try not to sneeze or blow your nose just after using the inhaler or spray.
• Use Rhinocort aqua on a regular basis for best results. It may take several weeks to get the maximum effect of this medication.

What happens if I miss a dose?

• Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and use the next one as directed. Do not use a double dose of this medication.

What happens if I overdose?

• An overdose of this medication is not likely to occur. If you do think that an overdose has occurred, call an emergency room or poison control left.

What should I avoid while using Rhinocort aqua?

• Avoid items or activities that you know are allergens for you if they make your symptoms worse. Clean areas where dust or pet fur may aggravate your condition.
• Avoid exposing yourself to known sources of infection. Stay away from people with chicken pox, measles, or any other type of infection. Your immune system may not be strong enough to fight off an infection while you are using Rhinocort aqua.

What are the possible side effects of Rhinocort aqua?

• Serious side effects from Rhinocort aqua are not likely to occur. Stop using Rhinocort aqua and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives).
• Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to use Rhinocort aqua and talk to your doctor if you experience
  • stinging or burning of the nose;
  • sneezing after application;
  • yeast infection in the nose or throat (white patches);
  • bleeding nose;
  • perforated septum (inside left of nose);
  • increased pressure in the eyes, glaucoma, or tearing of the eyes;
  • headache or lightheadedness;
  • nasal stuffiness or a runny nose; or
  • nausea.
• Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

What other drugs will affect Rhinocort aqua?

• Before using this medication, tell your doctor and pharmacist about any other drugs you are using. The use of other oral or inhaled steroids may increase the chance of side effects or overdose.
• Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Rhinocort aqua. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before using any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
